Welcome to the TVMA Academy FAQ page! Whether you’re just starting your martial arts journey or have been training for years, you’ll find clear answers about our programs, testing, gear, and more. Located in Lake in the Hills, Illinois, TVMA Academy is proud to offer traditional Taekwondo training for all ages and experience levels.

General Information

What is TVMA Academy?

TVMA Academy is a Kukkiwon certified Taekwondo school located in Lake in the Hills, IL. We combine the tradition of Korean martial arts with modern teaching methods to help students of all ages grow in skill, character, and confidence.

Where are you located?

We’re located at 421 N. Randall Rd, Lake in the Hills, IL.

Who teaches the classes?

Classes are led by Master Eric Ford, a certified Kukkiwon 4th Dan and Class 3 International Taekwondo Master.

TVMA Academy is proud to be a USATKD club!

Master Eric had to undergo and successfully complete a background screening via the National Center for Safety Initiatives as well as successfully complete the Center for SafeSport Training course.

The U.S. Center for SafeSport is an independent nonprofit 501 (c)( 3) committed to building a sport community where participants can work and learn together free of emotional, physical and sexual abuse and misconduct.

Programs & Classes

What age can my child start Taekwondo?

Children can begin as early as age 3 in our Tiny Lions program. We also offer age-specific classes for kids, teens, and adults to ensure appropriate instruction at every stage of development.

Do you have adult classes?

Yes! Our Adult Taekwondo classes focus on fitness, flexibility, and life extension philosophy. It’s never too late to start your martial arts journey.

Do you offer family classes?

Yes! We have family-friendly class options so parents and children can train together. It’s a great way to bond and grow stronger, physically and emotionally.

Do you offer private lessons?

Yes. Private instruction is available for students seeking focused development in poomsae, sparring, or overall progress. Ask our front desk or send us a message to learn more on our Contact Page.

Belt Testing & Progression

How does belt testing work at TVMA Academy?

At TVMA, belt promotions are earned, and treated as foundational steps to continue to build upon. Students are evaluated on their skills, discipline, poomsae, sparring, etiquette, and philosophical knowledge.

How often do belt tests happen?

Tests are offered approximately every 2 months, depending on readiness. Students are invited to test by their instructor once they consistently demonstrate the required skills.

What happens if my child doesn’t pass?

We value effort and growth. If a student doesn’t pass, they’ll receive a Commitment to Growth certificate and a personalized improvement plan. We believe every challenge is a step toward success.

Do you follow Kukkiwon standards?

Yes. Our curriculum and black belt certifications follow official Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo Headquarters) standards, ensuring global recognition of your rank.

Pricing & Membership

How much do classes cost?

We offer flexible pricing with discounts for families and multiple classes. Contact us for your free trial class and details on current rates and promotions.

Do you require a contract?

No long-term contracts are required. We believe in providing excellent instruction that earns your commitment month by month.

Uniforms & Equipment

What should I wear to my first class?

New students can wear comfortable workout clothing for their first class. Shoes, socks, and jewelry are not permitted in the training areas. Once enrolled, we will discuss uniform (dobok) options.

Where do I get sparring gear or uniforms?

All gear approved for training and competition can be purchased through our TVMA Pro Shop at the academy. We’ll help ensure proper fit and certification.

What gear do I need for sparring?

Students will need WT-approved headgear, chest protector, gloves, shin guards, forearm guards, mouthguard, and groin protection (for males). We’ll guide you through everything as you progress.

Competition & Special Events

Can my child compete in tournaments?

Yes! We offer Olympic-style sparring and poomsae team training for those interested in competition. Participation is always optional and age-appropriate.

Do you host school events?

Yes. We host belt testing ceremonies, in-house tournaments, family events, community service days, and more.

What is the Sparring IQ System?

Our unique Sparring IQ System teaches students to spar smarter, not just harder. It includes technical development, tactical awareness, and a progression system.

New Student Support

What if my child is nervous or shy?

We understand that starting something new can be intimidating. Our instructors are trained to work with students of all personality types, and we offer a nurturing environment that encourages confidence, not pressure.

How do I get started?
